Dana Vollmer sets world record

Dana Vollmer won a gold medal at the Olympics and set a world record, too.
Not bad for someone who didn't even qualify four years ago.
On a night featuring a relay duel between the Australians and the Americans, Vollmer got things started with a bang Sunday in the 100-meter butterfly. She was third at the turn but powered to the wall for a time of 55.98 seconds, beating the record of 56.06 set by Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom in a since-banned high-tech bodysuit at the 2009 world championships.

Dana Vollmer celebrates after setting a new world record with a 55.98-second gold medal run in the 100-meter butterfly.
The American dropped back her head when she saw the time, then broke into a huge smile, slapped the water and pumped her fists.

"I'm on top of the world right now." she said. "I still know I can go faster."

Vollmer, who made the Olympics as a 16-year-old in 2004, was a huge disappointment when she failed to make the team in Beijing in 2008. She was slowed by injuries and health problems, making her question whether she even wanted to continue swimming.

Day 1 highlights from London: USA swim team earns 4 medals

Lochte wins 400 IM final for first US gold. Ryan Lochte swims away from the field in the men's 400-meter individual medley final.

Ryan Lochte has won the 400 IM gold medal with an utterly dominant performance of 4:05.18, while Michael Phelps, the two-time defending Olympic champion, failed to medal after barely qualifying for the final. Lochte pulled ahead on the backstroke leg and gained two body lengths on the breaststroke lap, and was never threatened.

A crestfallen Phelps walked briefly through the international mixed zone after the race and described his fourth place finish — his first non-medal performance in an Olympic event since the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney — as “pretty upsetting.”

Phelps was relegated to lane No.8 after a mystifyingly slow performance in his morning preliminary, when he out-touched Lazlo Cseh to claim the last spot in the final by just seven hundredths of a second. He admitted afterwards, “That didn’t feel good.”

Although Phelps has six events remaining in London, it was a shockingly poor beginning for the man who won a record eight gold medals in Beijing four years ago. Asked earlier this week which title he most wanted to defend, Phelps had replied, “All of them.”

As the long shadow of Phelps faded in the Olympic pool, the perfect form of Lochte emerged. Lochte has been the more confident and dominant American swimmer since Beijing, and he fully ratified his status with a performance that looked deceptively easy in the water. In fact Lochte has worked relentlessly to surpass Phelps, even undertaking a strength program that includes flipping an 850-pound tire. “I know no other swimmer in the world is doing the stuff I’m doing,” he has said.

Phelps somber after fourth; Lochte celebrates 400 IM gold
Michael Pehlps reacts after a disappointing fourth place finish in the men's 400-meter individual medley final.
Michael Phelps described his fourth-place finish in the 400 meter individual medley as “pretty upsetting.”
Phelps, who was in a tight race only for third place, got fourth in 4 minutes, 09.28 seconds as Ryan Lochte claimed the gold medal in the event. Lochte finished in 4:05.18, followed by Brazil’s Thiago Pereira in 4:08.86. Japan’s Kosuke Hagino got the bronze in 4:08.94.

“It’s just really frustrating to start off on a bad note like this,” said Phelps, who failed to medal in an Olympic event for the first time since the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. “It’s pretty upsetting. I think the biggest thing now is just to get past this and move forward.”

Ryan Lochte poses on the podium with the gold medal after winning the men's 400-meter individual medley.
Ryan Lochte raised his arms to the crowd, then grinned widely as he accepted his gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley Saturday night. “USA!” chants briefly filled the swim arena before the national anthem played.

“I’m in kind of a shock,” Lochte had said moments after winning in 4:05.18 as defending Olympic champion Michael Phelps got fourth place. “Going into the race, I knew I was capable of getting the win. I’m happy I was able to do that.”

Ryan Lochte seemed as surprised as Michael Phelps that the two-time Olympic champion finished fourth in the 400-meter individual medley final Saturday night. Lochte greeted reporters wearing his signature “Jeah” baseball cap, turned slightly sideways.
“I know he gave it everything he had,” Lochte said about Phelps. “That’s all you can really ask. I’m going to talk to him and see how he feels about that.”

Bob Bowman, the longtime coach of Michael Phelps, said the poor lane assignment-lane eight-had nothing to do with Phelps’s stunning fourth-place finish in the 400 individual medley at the Olympic Games. Bowman said he didn’t think Phelps’s fitness was an issue, either.
He said he simply had no explanation for Phelps’s mystifying slow time time of 4:09.28-about two seconds slower than he swam at the U.S. Olympic trials.
“We just have to put it behind us and move on,” Bowman said. “I expected he would be in the four-oh-six, oh-seven range. He said it was horrible and it was. That was an accurate assessment.”

Beisel, Vanderkaay claim medals:
American swimmers picked up two more medals in the moments after Ryan Lochte’s 400 IM win. Peter Vanderkaay won bronze in the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:44.69; he finished behind China’s Sun Yang (3:40.14, an Olympic record) and Park Tae-Hwan (3:42.06).

Elizabeth Beisel picked up a silver medal in the women’s 400 IM in 4:31.27. China’s Ye Shiwen won in world record time, 4:28.43.
Franklin wins first medal:
Missy Franklin, a 17-year old rising senior who is aiming for seven medals in London, claimed her first as the U.S. women took bronze in the 4×100 meter relay. Australia won in Olympic-record time, 3:33.15, followed by the Netherlands (3:33.79). The American team of Franklin, Jessica Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt finished in 3:34.24.

Yi Siling First Women Gold Winer of Olympic Game 2012

Yi Siling
Summer Olympic Game of London, July 28, Yi Siling of China hailed her life-changing moment after being presented with the first gold medal of the London Olympics by IOC President Jacques Rogge following her victory in the women's 10 metre air rifle on Saturday.

Yi finished with a winning total of 502.9 points after 40 shots in the qualifying round and 10 in the eight-woman final at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Poland's Sylwia Bogacka, who led for most of the final, claimed silver with a total of 502.2 after a costly 9.7 shot in the eighth round. Yu Dan of China won bronze with a total of 501.5.

Yi, the world number one, smiled in delight as she scooped what is sure to be the first of many golds coming for China at the London Games.

"I feel very happy," Yi told reporters through an interpreter in between posing with her medal for photographers.

"For the first round and the last round I was very nervous and didn't know what I was doing.

"I think this is going to bring some changes to my life as well."

Among the 2,000 spectators in attendance for the final was International Olympic Committee President Rogge, who clapped from his seat when Yi was confirmed the winner as Chinese dignitaries around him leapt to their feet in delight.

"Yes I did (enjoy the shooting). It was very well presented there is a lot of suspense, it is a matter of tenths of points," Rogge told reporters.

"The crowd was very knowledgeable and very supportive."

Rogge said he would be attending all 26 sports in London and will present one more medal, at the men's marathon, the last he will do in his role which he steps down from next year.

Didn't Prepare:

They were neck and neck after scoring 10.8 in the first round of the final, where shooters fired at a target with a maximum achievable score of 10.9.

Bogacka nudged ahead with a 10.3 in the second round after Yi could only manage a 10 and the Pole maintained her lead through five rounds with another 10.8.

Victory looked assured as Yi fell 0.7 points behind after Bogacka fired a 10.5 in the seventh round with the duo way ahead of the other six competitors, but nerves inevitably played a part.

A poor 9.7 in the eighth round was capitalised on by the 23-year-old Chinese, who fired a scintillating 10.7 to turn a 0.3- point deficit into a 0.7 lead.

Yi then kept her composure to close out with 10.3 and 10.5 efforts to seal her first Olympic gold.

"I don't feel like a loser because I'm second," Bogacka told reporters with a rueful smile.

"It happens sometimes," she said of the crucial eighth-round shot. "I didn't prepare everything for this shot and that is the reason why I shot nine."

Yi said she had been lucky to gain victory but her greater consistency in the final, where her lowest score was 10, proved the difference with Bogacka twice hitting nines.

For Yi it brought an end to a long wait for her moment to shine after she became the first woman to qualify for the Games in 2010 following her victory at the world championships.

Nine months in a training camp followed in preparation for her first Olympics.

"I feel there has been a lot of pressure these last two years," Yi said, after security had to step in to remove the hoards of Chinese media who thronged her as she made her way to the news conference.

"Now I got the gold medal for the Olympic Games I feel very happy and very excited and.. I feel the pressure has been released."

Olympic Door Open in London 2012

The history of Britain was recounted in an artful yet glamorous fashion as the 17-day greatest show on Earth was unveiled on Friday.

The four-hour spectacle produced by Danny Boyle truly bore the hallmark of an Oscar-winning film director and a fine specimen of today's digital production techniques.
What would otherwise have passed as a multimedia presentation of a comprehensive history lesson was sold to the world as the Opening Ceremony of the July 27-August 12 Olympic Games, which London is hosting for an unprecedented third time.
The 10000-volunteer show cost £ 27 million, required months of rehearsing and surely showcasued the best of Britain and its contributions to the world.
Queen Elizabeth, in presence of 100 heads of state or government, declared the £ 14 billion Games, Europe's biggest project to date, open. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, flanked by son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, was all smiles when the five-strong Bangladesh contingent of athletes marched past.
The Queen, celebrating her Diamond Jubilee as monarch this year, became the only head of state in history to open two Games, the previous one being in 1976 in Montreal as the Queen of Canada.
In 1948, her father King George VI opened the most austere Games in history when the athletes were told to bring their own towels. Her grandfather kicked off the 1908 edition.

An estimated one billion people watched the show on Internet and TV across the world.
There were Shakespeare and Dickens, brutal uprooting of rural Britain, chaos of Industrial Revolution, a reminder of Brunel's wonders, the colourful 1960s when the Beatles ruled, the British scientist Tim Berners Lee who invented the world wide web, the Mr Bean-famed Rowan Atkinson, the much-known 12-year-old cancer patient, the now-famous Afghan war veteran and the young defined by the digital revolution of the past two decades.

Humayun Ahmed's Four Children Visit Nuhash Palli

Humayun Ahmed's four children from his first wife have offered fatiha at the grave of the celebrated writer and filmmaker at his Gazipur retreat Nuhash Palli.

Daughters Nova Ahmed, Sheela Ahmed, Bipasha Ahmed and son Nuhash Humayun, after whom the retreat, about an hour outside Dhaka, is named, were all present.
"His (Humayun Ahmed) grandchildren are also with them," Nuhash Palli Manager Saiful Islam Bulbul told on Friday referring to Nova and Sheela's children.

Though Nova, Sheela and Nuhash were present during their father's burial, Bipasha could not attend since she was still in the USA with her mother Gultekin Khan.
Humayun Ahmed's first wife Gultekin Khan and their daughter Bipasha returned to Bangladesh from the US on Thursday. But Gultekin did not come to Nuhash Palli on Friday, Bulbul said.
After spending two days at the resort, the writer's second wife Meher Afroz Shaon returned to Dhaka on Thursday.

Shaon, her two sons Nishad and Ninit, and her mother Tahura Ali, an MP, started for Dhaka Thursday afternoon.
Humayun Ahmed, 64, died at a hospital in the US on July 19 after a nearly ten-month battle against colon cancer. He was buried at Nuhash Palli on Tuesday.
The writer's burial triggered a dispute between his second wife Meher Afroz Shaon and his other relatives. They were divided over where to lay him down and it was decided only after a day-long drama that went as high as the prime minister who delegated a state minister to resolve the issue.
The issue was finally resolved around 3am.
Humayun's three children from his first wife wanted their father to be buried somewhere in Dhaka so that everyone could visit his grave easily.

Humayun married Gultekin in 1973. They got divorced in 2003 after the writer was said to be in the middle of an affair with Shaon, his daughter Sheela's best friend. He married Shaon after two years.

Olympic Stadium Design: London 2012 Olympic Games

Olympic Stadium Design: London 2012 Olympic Games Open 27July 2012
The construction of the Olympic stadium in London was officially completed. The stadium will be the key facility for the upcoming Olympics, in the capital of Britain. The stadium is located in the south of the Olympic Park. The entire construction is new and is made especially for the Olympic Games 2012.  208 events will be held on this stadium from the Olympic Games next year.
 Olympic Stadium 2012

Olympic Stadium has 80,000 seats. Its construction took 1,000 days, which is 90 days less than the schedule. Its construction did cost 486 million pounds, which is 10 million less than initially budget. In the building of the stadium the constructors used special type of steel that made the stadium 75 % lighter that similar stadiums with regular steel. One eco-friendly parts is that they used only low-carbon concrete, made from industrial waste and containing 40 per cent less embodied carbon than usual. The top of the stadium is made form used gas pipes. The permanent seats are 25,000 and the extra 55,000 specially added for Olympic Games 2012 will be removed after the games. The last layer of grass on the pitch put the former sprinter Frankie Fredericks of Namibia, which has four silver medals at the Olympics. "The scale of the stadium impresses me, even while walking on it. When it is full of spectators, the experience of British athletes will be unique," said Fredericks.
